Fall gear for the Brainerd Lakes, with water temps at 55–58°F. Panfish have moved to 25–35 ft, walleye are deep by day and shallow after dark, river fish are stacked below dams, and it's sucker season for muskie and big pike. The two presentations that matter most for October walleye. Use a Jigging Rap on deep breaks and sunken structure by day, and a jig tipped with a shiner or fathead on everything else.
Fall crappies and perch are schooled at 25–35 ft near the deepest basin. Fish straight down on a marked school with compact, dense baits that get there fast. Deep fish don't release well, so decide on your keepers before you drop.
River walleye, smallmouth, and pike are migrating upstream and stacking in deep pools and below dams. You need enough weight to stay on the bottom in current, and baits that work slowly in cold water.
As temps fall through the 50s, big live suckers become the top producer for muskie and trophy pike. Pair them with big baits for casting, heavy leaders, and release tools within reach before you set a line.
October water is cold enough that a fall overboard is an emergency. Wear a USCG-approved life jacket every trip. A comfortable inflatable is the one you'll actually keep on. Warm, waterproof layers matter more than any lure on this page.
